The Mindfulness of Architecture

In Vedic traditions, the architect is considered as a scholar, a poet, a priest and craftsman at the same time. Therefore he has to meet the topmost character demands. Just like a poet weaves nets of dreams, the architect weaves the poetry of buildings. He is a creative artist who will design a new creation on the basis of the laws laid down in the scriptures. The architect must fulfil four demands

>> he should know the scriptures and in addition he should be trained in mathematics, astronomy, astrology and landscape. Further more, he should have realised this knowledge through practical experience. The architect should also be well versed in practical arts such as drawing, modelling and woodwork.
>> However, the knowledge of the scriptures and practical experience of the architect are not
sufficient to turn him into a master. In addition, deep intuition and clear personal insight universal relationships are required.
>> In this connection the Vedas state:The ocean of the science of architecture is very big, difficult to cross, without any light and surrounded by darkness. Many branches are still impenetrable and can only be crossed if the sage has intuitive knowledge.
>> Next to the intuition which turns the architect into a sage, a fourth qualification has to be fulfilled: an immaculate character considered to be the most important of all qualities. The holy art of architecture can only be entrusted to an architect of highest moral integrity. Otherwise hindrances like anger, envy, greed, attachments and disturbance may arise which will suffocate the true and auspicious art.
